Description

You can easily and economically "go green" by taking advantage of a natural occurrence - rain. Benefit the environment - and watch your water bill shrink - with an Exaco ECO 70 Wooden Square Rain Barrel. Made of Torrefied FSC-certified Canadian Spruce wood, this high-quality rain barrel comes with all the necessary parts to connect it to a standard downspout. Installation is easy, and the in-line set-up with built-in overflow allows water to flow through the downspout when the barrel is full.

This unit comes with a durable, solid brass tap, and the sturdy wood frame houses a heavy-duty bladder. This is a closed unit, which means no mosquitoes or other critters will call it home. During dry seasons, owning an ECO Rain Barrel will be particularly beneficial. Worry no more about local water-use restrictions. With the fresh rainwater you collect, you can still water your garden and potted plants, wash you car, and even wash the dog!

What Is Torrefaction?
Torrefaction is a drying process in which the wood is subjected to a temperature of 200-300 degrees centigrade at near atmospheric pressure. At this temperature, the biomass partially decomposes, altering the chemical nature of the wood. This alteration consists of a loss of oxygen and hydrogen, leaving behind a larger concentration of carbon. The result of this process is a wood product that has a very low moisture uptake, and consequently a low rate of biological degradation. Torrefaction of wood is a natural preservation process, which is achieved without the application of chemicals.

Comments about Exaco ECO 70 Wooden Square Rain Barrel:

I had the same problem the first person had. The wood was warped when I took it out of the box, which made putting it together difficult. Then water leaked near the faucet. Then the wood began coming apart. Last night during a hard rain it exploded. The top was 15 feet away and other pieces were in a pile.

Comments about Exaco ECO 70 Wooden Square Rain Barrel:

My husband had to practically rebuild this very expensive barrel! Hardware included for the wood connections did not match. The top was not level and wouldn't close properly. The brass faucet leaked terribly. In an effort to stop the leaking, the faucet was over-tightened and the top fell off so he had to empty the barrel and take it all apart to repair and purchase a new faucet.

Comments about Exaco ECO 70 Wooden Square Rain Barrel:

Assembly was difficult because the threads on all of the bolts provided had to be repaired before use. Each one needed to be filed or the nut would not fit. The next day after setting up the rain barrel, there was enough rain to fill it. The sides immediately broke open and all of the captured water spilled out. The wood that is used is very good looking but cannot handle the weight of the water!

                Customer Q & A

Q1: How does the water get in? Does it have a mosquito net?

A: This rain barrel comes with a wooden lid which either sits loose on top or can be screwed down. As such there is no hole for mosquitoes to go into the water. They would have to go up the down spout and through the diverter kit.

Q2: Can this wooden rain barrel be painted?

A: Yes, this wooden rain barrel can be painted, but when you receive it you may not want to. The ECO 70 Square Rain Barrel actually has a beautiful finish, from the Torrefaction process, and the picture doesn't even do it justice.

Q3: The description indicates that the ECO 70 Square rain barrel comes with 'all the necessary parts to connect it to a standard downspout'....specifically, what parts are included?

A: Each rain barrel comes with a specially made, in Germany, diverter kit. This is added/put into the down spout. All necessary materials and instructions are included.

Q4: Do you have to have a downspout for collecting rainwater?

A: We do recommend having a downspout or routing system for your rain barrel.
