Rain Barrel
Diverter, Hose, Linking Kit
Additional features
Rain happens. Rain is free. A 60 gallon rain barrel can fill in less than .25-inches of rainfall (depending on the size of your roof and gutter system). Rain barrels can go a long way in offsetting your domestic water needs: including gardening, car washing, and pool topping. In turn, the burden on the local water system or your well will diminish and ultimately save you money. Collecting rain water has become as typical as recycling bottles, cans, newspapers, and composting. Link two or three barrels together (linking hose not included) and you can save up to 180 gallons of precious rain water.
The Great American Rain Barrel is built to be extremely durable with a wall thickness of 3/16", resulting in a rigid, heavy duty rain barrel that will last virtually forever. Each UV protected polyethylene rain barrel is manufactured in the USA from a recycled shipping barrel that stands 39-inches tall by 24-inches wide and weighs 20 lbs. empty. The barrel comes complete with overflow fitting, drain plug, and screw on cover. You can choose an optional spigot, too, and you have a choice of the spigot positioned at 4 or 14 inches off the ground. Attach your garden hose to the spigot and water your garden or lawn, even wash your car. We suggest raising the barrel for use with a regular garden hose as it's gravity fed. Our rain barrel arrives with simple instructions for fast and easy installation.
How to Link Barrels Together
To save even more water, you can link your first barrel to a second, also using a (shorter) piece of 3/4" hose. Simply unscrew the upper plug (on the second barrel) and replace it with a second elbow. Attach one end of your hose to the overflow fitting (on barrel one) turning the fitting so that it is horizontal, and then attach it to the other end to the new elbow on the second barrel (which should also be turned horizontally). Attach your overflow hose to the second elbow (on barrel two) so that once that barrel has filled, you can direct excess water away from the foundation. We recommend keeping barrels close together for best results.

I use it to store rainwater that collects on our pool cover. I'm planning on getting more rain barrels to hook up to our roof rain-gutters. Although I could use a larger size, this size works as far as fitting into tight spaces near the rain-down-spouts. The 60 gallon is also small enough to move (carefully) when full. The spicket looks a little high. I haven't used the spicket, but it seems that if you hook a hose up to it, there will be quite a bit of water at the bottome once the water level is below the spicket.

These rainbarrels have all the right features, but the 2 most important are limited in functionality. The spigot is so high up on the barrel that you can only use half of the water in it. Both the main valve and the overflow valve are so small, that more rain comes in than can get out, so it is also not terribly functional. I am ultimately having to do all the valve plumbing myself with new valves, so the extra expense of this barrel with the features is unwarranted.

Comments about Great American Rain Barrel Great American Painted Rain Barrel:
Came in quickly. Packaged well, looks great and was easy to setup. Needs a second person to hold outside spigot while inside nut is tightened but essentially a one person project. Had first rain 2 days after setup and the 3" rainfall in 6 hours filled it to overflowing. Perfect choice and exceeded expectations.

The Barrel arrived pretty fast and had eveything it should have. It's big and sturdy and easy to set up.
It has't rained since the purchase so I do not know how the filter on top handles big volumnes of preciptation. I'll keep you posted.

Happy with my purchase. It looks exactly like it does in the picture and is not too heavy (sans water). It arrived quickly and I am excited to put it to use for our spring planting.

i owned 2 of these at our old house, and I let my wife talk me into getting a different style at the new place!
WRONG
First thing I realized is the tops dont come off almost any of the others, including the one I just bought...dipping my bucket/trug could get most of the water, and I also used a short hose and gravity from the lower spigot to get most of the water![barrel sat on 2 blocks] used steel spigot from Ace
Never had any bug/mosquito issues in 10 years

Q1: How do you completely empty barrel with spigot so high?
A: We recommend once the water falls below the spigot line unscrew the lid and dunk the bucket or Watering Can to extract the remaining water. There is also another hole below the spigot (hidden by the plant in the image) that allows for drainage.
