I use the product so I don't have to haul water out to my husband's garden. Why am I hauling water you might as? I'm the one with the idea and it's a good conservation move. I have it right next to his garden with water coming off the garage roof into the barrel. It now comes with a metal faucet that I didn't get on quite straight, but it doesn't leak. Not wanting to keep turning that spigot because it is in plastic, I bought a small valve for it that turns easily on and off. I only wish there were a couple of faucets at different levels so I wouldn't have had to put the barrel up on several layers of bricks to get the faucet higher off the ground to put a watering can under the faucet. I like the screen on top and the fact that the opening to the barrel is small so I don't have to worry about the children in the neighborhood falling in. I'm pleased so far.

We set the barrel up immediately, and loved how it sat against the wall, and had a great capacity for holding water. However, the hose bib is completely plastic, and at first install, leaked around the edges. Luckily, we had only put it a small amount of water to "test" the hold, so removed the water, reset the bib using a better silicone tape, and the second time it held. I am worried about it for the long term, though, as plastic parts might not wear as well as I would hope, and for the cost, I would have expected a little better grade.

Comments about RTS Plastics RTS 50 gal. Plastic Flat Back Rain Barrel:

This flat-back barrel is just right to fit between the house and the AC compressor. I use it to collect AC condensation in the summer, and run-off from the whole-house humidifier in the winter. The overflow "knobs" on each side at the top accepted a 3/4 inch PVC fitting with a little whittling so I was able to add a hose bib at the top of the barrel to direct overflow away from the house and on to the flower beds. It is well made and just right for what I needed.

Q1: Does the lid flip up so that I could dip a bucket in if i wanted to?

A: The RTS Flat Back 50 Gallon Rain Barrel does not have a lid that can be opened.

Q2: Can I reroute my spouting from the overflown back to the downspouting?

A: You can attach a piece of old garden hose with a threaded nipple and feed it back to the downspout.
