Description

Why Save Rain Water
Only ¼ inch of rain is needed to fill a 60 gallon barrel. Sixty gallons can cover about 100 square feet with 1 inch of water. This can go along way in offsetting garden needs in the spring and summer months when water consumption increases anywhere between 20 and 200%. Capturing rain water in a barrel before it hits the ground decreases stormwater runoff, which otherwise carries pollutants from paved surfaces into groundwater and rivers.

Installation Guidelines
Tools needed: a hacksaw & measuring tape

  • Diverter attaches easily to gutter downspout
  • Draw a line on the downspout approximately 9 inches above the top of the rain barrel
  • Move the barrel away
  • Use a hacksaw and cut the downspout at the line or marking
  • Note: if a downspout bracket is below your cut, remove the bracket and place it above the cut
  • Attach diverter and set angle
  • The diverter is designed so that you can crimp the sides of the downspouts to fit the diverter
  • Done!

We have two Save the Rain diverters. They are installed into 2 different downspouts at opposite corners of our house, and both feed into 2 rain barrels hooked together.
The diverters are extremely easy to install. One we have had for several years, and it still operates perfectly. We just got the second one, and it is performing just as well.
The advantage to using these, is that when the rain barrels are full, you just close the spout, and the rest of the rainwater flushes out through your existing downspout system. This eliminates the problem of having overflow from your rain barrels flooding near your house foundation. It is also more aesthetic, since you don't need large overflow hoses snaking from your rain barrels into your yard.
This systems also allows you to store your rain barrels in a shed or garage, at the end of the season. You simply close the diverter, and your downspout is fully functional.

installation was rather simple and it is easy to use since you just flip the spout up or down. The flaw with it is that it drips when the spout is down for the rainbarrel so if it is not raining but a little most of the water drips down to the gutter instead of into the rainbarrel. this is a logical flaw since there is when the spout is down there is a 'seam' at the back that is not calked or sealed that is where water drips. Didn't find that to be a big deal but hadn't expected it.

Comments about Great American Save the Rain Water Metal Diverter - 2 x 3 or 3 x 4:

We moved to this property in January of this year. We started square foot gardens and wanted an effective, efficient way to water while we are out of town. Our rain barrels, we believe, will supply the garden via drip irrigation. This diverter was the simplest, yet most functional we found for our purposes. We use one diverter to fill the primary barrel and then have the over flow go into an adjacent barrel. The only difficulty was cutting into the downspout, but we conquered!

I had bought a rain barrel, and let it sit unused for a year because I had a fear of sawing into my downspout and making a mess of things. I saw this diverter on a PBS program and thought that it looked easy to install and it was! The real selling point for me is that at the end of the summer, you just close up the diverter, and your downspout goes back to being fully functional.

Very easy to install - just use a hacksaw to cut out a piece from your existing downspout, this nuit will easily fit in. Now you can redirect some or all of the rain water to a barrel or whatever you decide to connect the outlet to.
